Is the Supernatural Real? A Christian and an Atheist Debate

Below is a great segment from Lee Strobel's Faith Under Fire--a program that often features leading Christians debating or discussing leaders from non-Christian traditions over a variety of topics.

Watch the video HERE.

Representing the Christian side is Professor JP Moreland.

University of Missouri: B.S. in Chemistry
Dallas Theological Seminary: Th.M. in Theology
University of California, Riverside: M.A. in Philosophy
University of Southern California: Ph.D. in Philosophy

Representing the atheist side is Edward Tabash.

Tabash is a well-known, well-respected lawyer and political/social activist.
He was educated at UCLA and Loyola Law School.

Let me know what you think. I encourage any and all feedback.

I have always been annoyed the term 'super natural'. Let us assume for a second that heaven exists and God works in our lives. God and heaven, then, would not be 'super natural' but natural. Heaven is a part of the nature of the universe and I am sure it follows its own laws.

With that defined, God, heaven, angels and the like are NOT supernatural. The question is, do they exist.

THAT question seems to be the entire purpose of this blog and should not be tackled in a single post.

I wouldn't mind for a change in terms myself. I'm not sure who coined the term supernatural--but I would bet that they did so to differentiate between man and God--that the finite is not the same as the infinite.

I'm sure it has to do with anthropomorphic language--although the Bible doesn't make a distinction between the natural and the supernatural (using those specific terms).

I certainly think using the term supernatural can be damaging to Christian theology in some respect. However, there must be some sort of distinction or else, as theologian Wayne Grudem points out "we may tend to devalue or deemphasize the gifts which we think to be 'natural'" (Grudem, Systematic Theology, pg 1027).

Jason, you know God exists :)
